Nakuma Wani-Kenyi

Nakuma Wani-Kenyi is a Senior Attorney with the Office of the Chief Counsel for International Commerce (OCC-IC).  Her practice focuses on advisory committees, textiles, energy and environment, and data privacy (including advising on the Privacy Shield Framework and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Cross-Border Privacy Rules).  She also covers issues relating to the U.S. Commercial Service and South America.  

Prior to joining OCC-IC, Nakuma was in private practice, where she acquired valuable skills in client-centered advocacy, case negotiations, and conflict resolution.  She also previously served as the Senior Judicial Law Clerk for the Honorable Denise M. Francois at the Superior Court of the U.S. Virgin Islands.  

Nakuma is a 2017 graduate of American University Washington College of Law, where she served as a publications editor of the Journal of Gender, Social Policy, & the Law and a student attorney of the International Human Rights Law Clinic.  In 2017, Nakuma was awarded the Dean's Professional Responsibility Award and the J.D. Distinguished Fellowship, and recognized as a member of the Pro Bono Honors Program.  While earning her law degree, Nakuma interned at the American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative, the Association of Corporate Counsel, the World Bank, and the Refugee Law Project, which is based in Kampala, Uganda.  She holds a BS in Criminal Justice and Psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University. 

Nakuma is originally from South Sudan. In her spare time, Nakuma prioritizes mentorship and community service. She also enjoys reading motivational books, spending quality time with friends and family, and domestic and international traveling.

Nakuma is a member of both the Maryland and D.C. bars.
